WHY DO THEY HAVE SCARS?!!??!!
Reply
:iconbalex:

"Another factor that increases dolphins' swimming speed by reducing their drag in the water is the smooth skin they possess. It is kept smooth by constantly being sloughed off and replaced. A bottlenose dolphin for example, replaces its outermost layer of skin every two hours. This is nine times the rate of human skin renewal. A drawback of their smoothness, however, is that their skin is easily scarred. Virtually all adult dolphins have an array of scars, notches and nicks that they acquired through interactions with companions, enemies or the environment. Scars on dolphins are so prevalent in fact that researchers often rely on them as a means of identifying individual animals."

Jesus, all of you, I can't even comprehend what you guys just said.

And did you know that at that Swim with the Dolphins place in Florida, those dolphins that should have a long life span only live for about a year and a half, because they're exposed to human illnesses??

That's, like, evil.
I mean, I see how it totally excites people, it's such a charming experience, and the dolphins might have fun, but it's still sad, don't you think so?

"Scars on dolphins are so prevalent in fact that researchers often rely on them as a means of identifying individual animals."

This is contradictory to everything you just posted. If they slough off the scarred layers 9 times as fast as we do, at a rate of every 2 hours, how would that possibly be a reliable means to identify individual animals? Every few days it would look like a brand new dolphin!

I believe it was in referal to the larger, prominent scars such as huge chunks missing from fins, etc. Not small scratches and such. Animal planet teaches wonderfully.

perhaps that part is false? I don't know, I'm not a professional on dolphins or anything, so I wouldn't be able to explain it to you. I was just trying to provide a reason for their excessive scarring. All the dolphins I've ever seen, in both captivity and wild, have had some scarring.

Teen rivalry isn't unique to humans. ;)
Of course, it may be that the closed envuronment pissed them off more often than necessary, which I would also believe. But you see the same marks extremely often in the wild.
